One application for the VIA-30J video crossline generator involves using the crossline marker as a "target" for the SEMQ (Scanning Electron Microscope for Quantitative Analysis) which is installed with a camera and monitor. When the VIA-30J video crossline generator is used with a video camera and monitor, operators are able to overlay a video image with crossed lines, vertical lines or horizontal lines which are positioned then anchored. Using a Set Up Menu, operators may select which line type(s) will be used.

By operating a Markers button on the joystick controller, users may choose one of ten marker or line patterns in varying line thicknesses. By selecting and placing individual lines anywhere on the screen, simple and complex combinations of lines may be created in one graphic overlay. The overlay may be stored for fast and easy retrieval, making the VIA-30J a necessity in any operation requiring high repeatability.

The VIA-30J is intended for use with all monochrome RS-170 and color NTSC composite cameras and monitors with black and white overlays generated on the video images. The VIA-30J is compatible with the Boeckeler VIA-RGB and VIA-Y/C video interfaces, which allow the VIA-30J to be used with RGB and Y/C (S-Video) monitors and cameras. These interfaces offer the opportunity to create brightly colored marker overlays. An export model is compatible with European CCIR and PAL video standards.
